An Evening with Amber Iman

Audible is pleased to announce An Evening with Amber Iman, the next live event from Audible Theater, running for three nights only from Thursday, April 21 to Saturday, April 23. An Evening with Amber Iman will be recorded live from the Minetta Lane Theatre and released to a global audience as an Audible Original.

Through songs and storytelling, An Evening with Amber Iman takes the audience on a journey through love, loss, rejection, heartbreak, and joy, in a performance that challenges, encourages, and uplifts, reminding us to take it one day at a time.

“The ability to put on short-run shows focused on a single incredible performer is a specialty of Audible Theater’s work at the Minetta Lane Theater,” said Kate Navin, Artistic Producer of Audible Theater. “As the first actress to return to Broadway following the pandemic, we are especially honored to work with Amber Iman to bring her original work live on stage and available to millions more through Audible.”

Amber Iman is a performer, filmmaker, and activist. Amber made history as the first woman to perform on Broadway after the pandemic shut down, as part of the NY PopsUp festival, which welcomed audiences back into Broadway theatres. Amber is one of the most sought-after theatre artists and vocalists working today. She debuted on Broadway as the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone, in Soul Doctor, earning rave reviews and a Clive Barnes Award nomination. Since, she has been seen in George C. Wolfe’s Shuffle Alongbeside theatre luminaries Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter; she was seen in the National Tour of the megahit musical, Hamilton, and she has performed Off Broadway and regionally with New York Theatre Workshop, New World Stages, Two River Theater, the Kennedy Center, and many more, earning Helen Hayes and IRENE Award nominations, and winning the Ovation Award and the prestigious Emery Battis Award for Acting Excellence from Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC. On TV, Amber has been seen on High Maintenance for HBO, and her self-produced short film Steve has been a critical darling at film festivals across the country. This summer, Amber will star in two highly anticipated Broadway-bound musicals: Lempicka at La Jolla Playhouse and Goddess at Berkley Repertory Theatre. As an activist, Amber is the proud Co-Founder of the Broadway Advocacy Coalition and Black Women on Broadway. In 2021, Amber was honored with a Toy Award for her work with BAC.

Tickets for An Evening with Amber Iman go on sale to the public on Wednesday, March 30 at Audible.com/MinettaLane. Audible Theater is proud to collaborate with TodayTix to offer mobile Rush tickets beginning at 10am each performance day. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis exclusively through the TodayTix app.

Broadway Verses

On November 17th, I hosted the first Broadway Verses battle between the incomparable, indelible, iconic Lillias White & Andre Deshields. Produced by Broadway Advocacy Coalition, the event was a wonderful celebration of the lives, legacies, and THROATS of two of Broadway’s trailblazers. The event raised over $34,000 for the Cody Renard Richard Scholarship Fund and was one of the highlights of a truly challenging year. See below for more photos and keep your eyes peeled for the next Verses.

Black Women On Broadway

Me and My Girls, Jocelyn Bioh & Danielle Brooks

Me and My Girls, Jocelyn Bioh & Danielle Brooks

Danielle Brooks, Jocelyn Bioh, and I created a new platform, "Black Women On Broadway" - celebrating the rich legacy of Black Women in Theatre. Our goals are to create community, provide education and access into the theatre industry (from box office to backstage), and to foster opportunities for mentorship & scholarship. Before Covid-19 hit, we were in the throes of planning an inaugural event to launch our organization. But, quarantine opened our eyes to a greater need. We polled 30 Black female artists and asked, "What do you need?" The responses were overwhelming.  Black women in our community need to be seen, heard, affirmed, and supported. We don't have a sense of community - we chat in passing, at auditions or opening night parties, but there's no real communication, collaboration, and rarely is there time for celebration.

So, we started building a platform on Instagram, posting photos and videos of Black Women in theatre - regional, community, high school & college, tours, off-Broadway and on. On June 29th, we produced a wonderful event, The Black Women In Theatre Appreciation Day: an all day virtual conference of workshops and panels to equip & empower the next generation to continue blazing the trail. We started with a movement & meditation class to prepare our minds, bodies, and spirits for the day. Then, the panels discussed finance/money management, how to create an awesome self-tape, Producing 101, and the evening concluded with a conversation between legends Lillias White & Audra McDonald (followed by a ladies night dance party)!  It was the first of many events that we hope to create. We are committed to building and strengthening our community, one day at a time. Follow us on Instagram: @BlackWomenOnBroadway.

At the Third Annual Samuel French Awards, my friends Lucy Simon & Marsha Norman received the Award for Sustained Excellence in American Theatre. It was an honor to sing my favorite song from Secret Garden, “Hold On” (I’m biased) and to be on the same bill as the legendary Christine Ebersole & Sierra Boggess. It was one for the books.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

When I was 14, I played one of the Urchins in “Little Shop of Horrors” at my alma mater, North Springs High School (Go Spartans!). I don’t remember which role I played, what solo I sang, but I do remember that our costumes where modeled after Marilyn Monroe (including cheap blonde wigs) and they were ATROCIOUS! I’m so glad I got a do over with one of the SICKEST casts in the business. Led by Josh Radnor & Megan Hilty, we had a blast bringing the classic to life. What a pity that it was such a short run (only 8 performances), but the opportunity to hit the stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts (a dream) in the DISTRICT, during the week of the greatest Homecoming ever, at the MECCA and my alma mater Howard University - WHAT AN AMAZING TIME!!!! And yes, I sang my whole throat loose!

What a day. Along with 11 other powerhouse, BAD ASS women, I got to play Juror #8 in a one-night only benefit performance of an all female “12 Angry Men”. Produced by Lauren Class Schneider, the reading raised awareness around the upcoming Midterm elections. I haven’t gotten to do a play in AGES, and I was so honored to participate in such a powerful & poignant piece.

What a joy it was to sing a little ditty with fellow Chocolate Sensation for all the nations, Joshua Henry. Central Park was the place to be for the 4th annual Elsie Fest - a one-day outdoor music festival celebrating the stars and songs of musicals of the stage and screen. Joshua arranged an absolutely sickening “Memory” from Cats and accompanied us on guitar. I lived my life. We sang DOWN. #ShuffleOffToHamilton

Amber Iman & BFF Jason Robert Brown....!!!

Me, My BFF Jason Robert Brown, Nick Blaemire

Me, My BFF Jason Robert Brown, Nick Blaemire

7 months have passed and I still can’t believe it happened. I got a message in my facebook inbox from a man claiming to be THEE Jason Robert Brown. He asked me to join him in concert at Subculture (where I had JUST done my one-woman show) where he’s been performing in residency. I died 3,000 deaths. Then, I thought it was a hoax. I figured it was a bored teenager pulling a cruel prank. But, it was the real JRB.

Weeks later, we met at his UWS home to choose songs and rehearse. I’m just casually sitting in his music room, peering up at his collection of TONY awards and show posters, playing with his puppy, on the morning that he finds out he’s an Outer Critics Circle Award nominee for Outstanding Orchestrations of “Prince of Broadway”. 16 year old Amber is screaming Bloody Murder. He hands me the sheet music to 2 new songs…..I get to sing BRAND NEW JRB TUNES…. Jesus Christ. And then we decide on “You don’t know this man”, that I first heard in college, as sung by my other BFF Audra Elizabeth McDonald (I gave her that middle name, so don’t look for it on wikipedia). We somehow landed on the jazziest, sexiest arrangement ever - and I was in heaven.

The concert was AMAZING. Getting to share the stage with JRB wasn’t even a dream come true, because I’d never dream that such a think could happen…from a facebook message. But I’m forever grateful to JRB for thinking of me, and becoming my BFF. #JRBandME

NYC... I'M BACK!!!

AMBER 1.jpeg

MONDAY / APRIL 9 / 7:30P / SUBCULTURE / 45 BLEECKER STREET

In her solo show debut, actress, writer and activist Amber Iman delves into the complexity of being black, bold and fierce in America. Using personal stories and songs, she takes the audience on a journey through love, rejection, race, artistry and heartbreak in a performance that ultimately uplifts and reminds us that we have the capacity to move forward from any setback.

Brazen, hilarious, unflinchingly political and musically gifted, Amber Iman has spent the last year starring in the National Tour of Hamilton. She has appeared on Broadway in Shuffle Along and Soul Doctor and has starred in numerous off Broadway and regional theater productions.

SF GIANTS OPENING DAY (NATIONAL ANTHEM)

NBA FINALS (NATIONAL ANTHEM)

25 Million Viewers in 215 countries....

I'm still in shock! Along with my cast mates Joshua Henry, Solea Pfeiffer, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, I had the honor and the pleasure of singing the National Anthem for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, between the Cleveland Cavaliers and The Champions, The Golden State Warriors. Watch below!

BROADWAY'S MIXTAPE: The House that Rock Built

On September 11th, 2016, In conjunction with Broadway Style Guide, Kate Egan presented "Broadway's Mixtape: The House that Rock Built" at Le Poison Rogue - a night of awesome rock stars sung by Broadway's finest. It was a PHENOMENAL night of music and I got to rock out and reunite with my Shaylimo and "Soul Doctor" co-star, Eric Anderson. We sang a killer cover of "Under Pressure" by the late David Bowie and Annie Lennox. Scroll down for pics!

SeriousFun Children's Network NYC 2016 Spring Gala

On June 6th, SeriousFun Children’s Network hosted a star-studded gala at Cipriani in midtown New York City to celebrating the legacy that Paul Newman created – a family of camps and programs that bring joy, laughter and confidence to children living with serious illnesses all around the world.

The evening’s program featured appearances and performances from musician/philanthropist Jon Bon Jovi, actor Laura Linney, actor Kyle McLachlan, trumpeter Chris Botti, NBC News anchor Kate Snow, YouTube sensation Jamie Lou Stenzel, Donald Webber, Jr,  Amber Iman,  Sarah Stiles, and a group of very talented SeriousFun Campers. The View co-host, Joy Behar, served as the evening’s Auctioneer Extraordinaire.

The evening was a true celebration and featured a series of live performances, video presentations, and readings that illustrated just how special the camps are and the important impact they have on the campers and their families.

The evening raised more than $1.5 million for SeriousFun Children’s Network, providing support for its 30 camps and programs around the world. Since its inception, SeriousFun camps and programs have served more than 600,000 children and their family members from more than 50 countries -- always free of charge.

I am incredibly grateful to Dick Scanlan for inviting me to be a part of such a wonderful evening for an incredible organization. Donald Webber, Sarah Stiles, and I had the immense privilege of reading letters written by the parents of some of the Serious Fun campers. See pics below!
